How to reverse a video in CapCut

CapCut’s Reverse tool plays the selected clip backwards on the phone apps and the desktop app. Here is where to find it, why it sometimes stalls, and what happens to the sound.

Drop a video to reverse

Watch it play backwards straight away, keep or reverse the sound, then save an MP4, GIF or WebP. Up to a minute at a time.Pick a video from your photos or files. Up to a minute is reversed at a time.

Works with MP4MOVWebMMKVand more

Your video is reversed on this device and never uploaded.

In the CapCut phone app, add the video to a new project, tap the clip on the timeline, tap Edit in the toolbar along the bottom, then scroll and tap Reverse (some versions show Reverse without opening Edit first). CapCut processes the clip and replaces it with a backwards copy. On the desktop app, select the clip and use Reverse in the toolbar above the timeline.

CapCut’s Reverse works on one clip at a time and only on the clip’s own picture and sound, which is why music on a separate track keeps playing forwards. If you only need a reversed file and don’t want to set up a project, the browser video reverser does that in three steps with no account. And if you came here for the forward-then-backward loop, see how to make a boomerang in CapCut.

How to reverse a clip in the CapCut app

  1. Start a project with the video

Open CapCut, tap New project, select the video from your gallery and tap Add.

  2. Select the clip

Tap the clip on the timeline so it is outlined. To reverse only part of it, move the playhead and tap Split first, then select the part you want.

  3. Tap Reverse

Tap Edit in the toolbar under the timeline, scroll along and tap Reverse. A progress bar shows while CapCut builds the reversed copy.

  4. Export

Tap the export button at the top right, choose the resolution and frame rate, and save the video to your phone.

Reverse a video in CapCut on desktop

  1. Open CapCut for Windows or Mac and start a new project.
  2. Import the video and drag it onto the timeline.
  3. Click the clip to select it.
  4. Click Reverse in the toolbar just above the timeline (hover over the icons to see their names), or right-click the clip and look for it in the menu.
  5. Click Export, choose the settings and save.

The desktop app reverses faster than the phone app on long clips, but it still makes a new copy of the footage first, so give it a moment on 4K video. In a professional editor the same job is a checkbox; see reversing a clip in Premiere Pro.

Why reversing in CapCut takes long or fails

Reversing means decoding the clip and storing every frame again in the opposite order, which is heavy work for a phone. When CapCut stalls on “Reversing” or reports that it failed, these usually help:

  • Shorten the clip first. Split off just the part you need and reverse that, rather than a five-minute video.
  • Free up storage. The reversed copy is a new file; a nearly full phone can’t write it.
  • Close other apps and keep CapCut in the foreground until it finishes.
  • Try a lower resolution source, or convert a 4K HDR clip to 1080p before reversing.
  • Update CapCut, then restart the phone if it still fails.

If it still won’t reverse, the browser video reverser reads the clip a section at a time from the end, so it copes with long phone videos without a separate copy step. Clips over a minute can be reversed in parts.

Keep the music playing forwards

Reverse only touches the selected clip. That gives you a few options for sound:

Music on its own track

Music added from CapCut’s sound library, or as a separate audio clip, isn’t reversed. Reverse the video clip and the song plays on normally.

The clip’s own sound

A clip’s own audio is reversed along with its picture. To keep that sound forwards, select the clip and use Extract audio before reversing, so the sound sits on its own track; then reverse the video and mute the clip itself. In the browser reverser, the same result is one switch: turn Sound on and Reverse the sound too off.

CapCut reverse questions

Where is the Reverse button in CapCut?

On a phone, select the clip on the timeline, tap Edit in the bottom toolbar and scroll to Reverse; some versions show it directly in the toolbar. On desktop, it is an icon in the toolbar above the timeline once a clip is selected.

Why is CapCut stuck on reversing?

Usually because the clip is long or high resolution, or the phone is short of storage. Split off a shorter part, free some space and keep the app open until it finishes.

Can I reverse only part of a video in CapCut?

Yes. Move the playhead to where the reversed part should start, tap Split, do the same at the end, then select the middle piece and tap Reverse.

Does CapCut reverse the audio?

It reverses the clip’s own sound with the picture. Music and audio on separate tracks keep playing forwards. Use Extract audio first to keep a clip’s own sound forwards.

How do I make a boomerang in CapCut instead?

Duplicate the clip, reverse the copy and place it right after the original, then repeat the pair. The CapCut boomerang guide walks through it.

Is there a way to reverse a video without CapCut?

Yes. The video reverser on this site runs in your phone or computer’s browser: choose the video, check the backwards preview, and export an MP4 with no account or watermark.
