# boomerang.video

> Make a boomerang from any video: pick the moment, set the speed, slow-mo or echo, and save an MP4, GIF or WebP that loops. Free, no upload, no watermark.

boomerang.video makes boomerangs: short loops that play a moment forwards and then backwards. The visitor opens any video (or films a few seconds with the camera), drags a window over the 0.4 to 6 seconds that should bounce, and sees the loop at once. A worker decodes that moment with WebCodecs into memory so reverse playback is smooth; styles and controls change speed, easing at the turn, a slow-motion section, frame blending, echo trails, a stutter and a rewind look. Exports are MP4 or WebM (the bounce repeated 1 to 10 times), GIF or animated WebP (one bounce, looping forever), made on the device. Nothing is uploaded; there is no API, account or server-side processing.

## What makes these boomerangs different

- **Smooth both ways**: The moment you pick is decoded once into memory, so playing it backwards is as fluid as playing it forwards. No stutter at the turn unless you ask for one.
- **Your bounce, your way**: Five styles to start from, then speed from 0.25× to 4×, ease at the turn, a slow-mo stretch, echo trails and a fast rewind with a tape look.
- **Stays on your device**: The clip is read and rendered by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and the result has no watermark.

## Making a boomerang, step by step

1. **Open a clip**: Drop a video on the page, press Choose a video, or use Record with camera to film a few seconds. Phone clips, screen recordings and MP4, MOV or WebM files all work.
2. **Pick the moment**: Drag the highlighted window on the strip under the preview to the part that should bounce, and drag its edges to make it longer or shorter (up to 6 seconds). The preview plays the boomerang straight away.
3. **Choose a style and speed**: Tap Classic, Slow-mo, Echo, Rewind or Stutter, then fine-tune Speed and Shape. More options holds the direction, ease at the turn, a slow-mo section, Smooth frames and the echo and rewind effects.
4. **Export and share**: Under Export settings pick MP4, WebM, GIF or WebP, then press Export boomerang. Download it, or on a phone use Share or save to Photos.

## Boomerang questions people ask

### What is a boomerang video?

A short clip that plays forwards and then backwards, over and over, so a jump, a toss or a clink of glasses goes out and comes back like a boomerang. It is usually one to three seconds of real time, played as a loop.

### Can I turn a video I already have into a boomerang?

Yes, that is what this site is for. Open any clip, drag the window on the strip to the moment you want, and the preview shows it bouncing. You don’t need to have filmed it in boomerang mode.

### Is it really free, with no watermark?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no paid tier and no watermark or end card on the export. The site is funded independently and counts visits with analytics you can switch off in Cookie settings.

### Does my video get uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes the clip, draws every frame and encodes the result on your own device with WebCodecs. The file never leaves it, which is why it works for private moments too.

### How long can the bouncing part be?

Between 0.4 and 6 seconds of your clip. Boomerangs look best short: about one to two seconds of action is the classic length. Slower speeds and the slow-mo section stretch that out, so one out-and-back can last much longer than the part you picked.

### Why does an MP4 boomerang repeat several times?

Many apps and players show a video once and stop, so the MP4 and WebM exports contain the bounce several times in a row (3 by default, set under Export settings → Loop). That way it reads as a boomerang even where it won’t loop. GIF and WebP exports hold one bounce and loop forever by themselves.

### Can I make a boomerang GIF?

Yes. Choose GIF under Format before you press Export boomerang. GIFs are made at 20 frames a second with one shared 256-colour palette, so colours don’t shimmer from frame to frame. For a sharper, smaller animated image choose WebP.

### What do the styles do?

Classic plays out and back at normal speed with a soft turn. Slow-mo halves the speed and blends frames. Echo leaves ghost trails behind anything that moves. Rewind snaps back at 2.5× speed with scan lines and a rewind badge. Stutter flicks back and forth for a beat at each end. Every style is a starting point you can change.

### Can I keep the sound?

Sound is off by default, as in most boomerangs. Turn on Sound under Export settings and it follows the picture, faster or slower like tape. Reverse the sound on the way back plays it backwards as the picture rewinds; switch that off to hear it forwards both ways.

### Which sizes and shapes can I export?

Shape crops to 9:16 for Stories, Reels and TikTok, 1:1 square, 4:5 portrait or 16:9 widescreen, or keeps the Original frame. Drag the preview to choose what stays in. Size Large is up to 1080p for video; GIF and WebP are smaller so they stay easy to share.

### Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in an up-to-date browser on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Mac and Chromebook. On a phone, Share or save to Photos sends the finished boomerang to your camera roll or straight to an app.

### Why won’t my video open?

Some formats, often HEVC from iPhones in browsers other than Safari, can’t be decoded natively. The site then converts the clip on your device first, which takes a little longer. If it still fails, try Chrome or Edge, or save the clip as an MP4 (H.264) first.
