About boomerang.video
The best boomerang moments are rarely planned. Someone flips a pancake, a dog leaps into a lake, a toddler throws a fistful of confetti, and by the time a phone is switched to boomerang mode the moment has gone. What is left is an ordinary video. boomerang.video exists for that video: it lets you go back, find the second worth bouncing, and turn it into a forward-and-back loop after the fact.
What you can do with it
- Open any clip, or record a few seconds with Record with camera, and drag a window on the Pick the moment strip to the part that should bounce.
- Start from a style (Classic, Slow-mo, Echo, Rewind or Stutter) and adjust Speed from 0.25× to 4×, the Shape of the frame, and, under More options, the direction, the ease at each turn, a slow-motion stretch, frame blending, echo trails and the rewind look.
- Export an MP4 or WebM that repeats the bounce so it reads as a boomerang anywhere, or a GIF or WebP that loops forever, with the sound off (the default) or bouncing along, backwards on the way back if you like.
How it works
Playing video backwards is harder than it looks, because compressed video only stores an occasional complete picture and describes the frames in between as changes. A reverse player has to keep decoding forwards to find each frame it needs. So boomerang.video decodes the moment you pick once, using your browser’s own WebCodecs decoder and the open-source mediabunny library in a background worker, and holds those frames in memory. The preview then plays them in any order at full smoothness. When you export, a second worker reads the clip again at full size, draws every frame of one out-and-back with the same code as the preview, encodes it, and repeats it for each bounce. All of this happens on your device.
The timing is deliberate. Each turn shows the turning frame once, so there is no tiny freeze. Easing reshapes the timing without changing its length, and the slow-motion section is anchored to the picture, so it slows in the same place in both directions.
Promises
- Private: your clip is never uploaded. We have no copy of it.
- Free: no paid tier, no trial, no sign-up.
- Clean: no watermark, logo or end card on anything you export.
- No ads: visits are counted with analytics you can turn off from Cookie settings at the foot of every page.
Who it’s for
Anyone who wants a boomerang without the Instagram camera: people who missed the moment in boomerang mode, people who don’t use Instagram at all, social media managers who need a 9:16 loop from footage they already have, teachers and presenters who want a looping GIF for a slide, and editors who need a clean ping-pong sequence. It runs in up-to-date browsers on phones, tablets and computers.
Who runs it
boomerang.video is an independent, self-funded project. How data is handled is set out in the privacy notice.
