# Reverse a video online

Open a clip and it plays backwards straight away. Reverse all of it or just a part, choose what happens to the sound, and save an MP4, GIF or WebP made on your own device.

To reverse a video, open it with **Choose a video** above. The tool switches to **Reverse**, selects the whole clip (up to a minute) and plays it backwards in the preview at once. Press **Export reversed video**, then **Download MP4**. The file is made in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark.

Reversing sounds simple, but video isn’t stored as a list of finished pictures: most frames only record what changed since the previous one, so a player can’t just run the file backwards. This video reverser decodes the part you choose a window at a time, starting from the end, and writes the frames out in reverse order as a new H.264 file. If you want the clip to play forwards and then back on a loop instead, that’s a boomerang, made on the [boomerang maker’s home page](https://boomerang.video/) or as a [ping-pong video](https://boomerang.video/ping-pong-video).

## How to reverse a video in 3 steps

1. ### Open the video
Press **Choose a video**, or drop the file on the page. MP4, MOV and WebM all work, including clips from an iPhone or Android phone. **Reverse** is already selected under **Make**.
2. ### Choose the part to reverse
The window on the **Pick the part** strip covers the whole clip, up to 60 seconds. Drag its edges to reverse only a section, and set **Speed** to 0.5×, 1× or 2× if you want it slower or faster.
3. ### Export and save
Under **Export settings**, pick a **Format** and turn **Sound** on if you want audio. Press **Export reversed video**, then **Download MP4**, or **Share or save to Photos** on a phone.

## Reverse only part of a clip

You don’t have to reverse everything. The **Pick the part** strip under the preview shows thumbnails of the whole video with a highlighted window over the section that will play backwards:

* Drag the middle of the window to move it along the clip.
* Drag either edge to make it shorter or longer (from 0.4 seconds up to a minute).
* With the window focused, the arrow keys move it by 0.1 seconds, or a second with Shift.

The export contains only the reversed section. To put it back into a longer edit, for example forwards footage, then the same moment backwards, then forwards again, export the reversed part here and place it between the original clips in your usual editor. The [Premiere Pro guide](https://boomerang.video/reverse-video-premiere-pro) shows that edit with a razor cut, and the [CapCut guide](https://boomerang.video/reverse-video-capcut) does the same on a phone.

## Sound: mute it, keep it forwards, or reverse it

Reversed speech sounds like nonsense, which is sometimes the joke and sometimes a problem. There are three choices:

* **Sound off** (the default): a silent reversed video, ready for music added later.
* **Sound on** with **Reverse the sound too** on: the audio plays backwards with the picture, so footsteps, splashes and voices run in reverse.
* **Sound on** with **Reverse the sound too** off: the picture runs backwards while the original sound plays forwards underneath, which keeps dialogue or music intelligible.

Sound changes speed with the picture, like tape, so at 0.5× it is also an octave lower. Sound is saved in MP4 (AAC) and WebM (Opus) only; GIF and WebP have no audio track.

## Reverse, boomerang or rewind effect?

These three get mixed up, and each suits a different clip:

### Reverse

The clip plays backwards once, from the last frame to the first. Use it for magic-trick edits (a jump out of a pool, a cup un-spilling), or to fix footage that was recorded in the wrong direction.

### Boomerang

A short moment plays forwards and then backwards, on a loop. Choose **Boomerang** under **Make** for that, or read [how to make a boomerang from a video](https://boomerang.video/make-a-boomerang-from-a-video).

### Rewind effect

The clip plays normally, then whips back fast, often with tape lines. That’s the **Rewind** style of a boomerang: it returns at 2.5× with scan lines and a rewind badge.

## Reversing on a phone or in an editing app

This page works in Safari and Chrome on phones as well as on computers. If you’d rather reverse inside an app you already use, these guides cover the built-in route first:

* [How to reverse a video on iPhone](https://boomerang.video/reverse-video-iphone): what Photos and iMovie can and can’t do.
* [How to reverse a video in CapCut](https://boomerang.video/reverse-video-capcut): on a phone and on the desktop app.
* [How to reverse a video on TikTok](https://boomerang.video/reverse-video-tiktok): before posting, or a clip you’ve saved.
* [How to reverse a video in Premiere Pro](https://boomerang.video/reverse-video-premiere-pro): Speed/Duration and smooth reverse.

On Android, Snapchat and other apps, see the reverse sections of the [Android boomerang guide](https://boomerang.video/boomerang-on-android) and the [Snapchat guide](https://boomerang.video/boomerang-on-snapchat). For the opposite job, playing forwards but slower, use [slow motion](https://boomerang.video/slow-motion-video).

## Questions about reversing videos

### How do I reverse a video for free?

Open it on this page with Choose a video, check the part on the strip, and press Export reversed video. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many videos you reverse; each one can be up to a minute long.

### Can you reverse a video without an app?

Yes. This page runs in the browser you already have, on a phone or a computer. The video is decoded and re-encoded on your device with WebCodecs, and the result downloads or goes to your phone’s share sheet.

### Does reversing a video reduce quality?

Any reverse has to re-encode the video, because the frames are stored in a new order. With Size set to Large the export keeps the original resolution up to 1080p (1920 pixels on the long edge) at 30 frames a second, which looks the same as the source for most phone footage. 4K clips are scaled down to that size.

### How do I reverse a video with sound?

Under Export settings, turn on Sound. Reverse the sound too is on by default, so the audio runs backwards with the picture; switch it off to keep the original sound playing forwards over the reversed picture.

### How do I reverse only part of a video?

Drag the edges of the window on the Pick the part strip so it covers just the section you want. Only that section is reversed and exported.

### Is there a length limit?

Up to 60 seconds of the clip is reversed at a time, and the exported video can last up to two minutes (at 0.5×). For a longer video, reverse it in sections and join them in an editor. GIF and WebP exports are limited to 20 seconds.

### Is this the same as a reverse video search?

No. A reverse video search looks for where a video came from online. This page plays a video file you already have backwards and saves the result.

### Can I reverse a GIF?

Open the GIF’s original video if you have it: this tool reads video files (MP4, MOV, WebM). You can then export the reversed clip as a GIF under Format.
