# How to reverse a video on TikTok

TikTok’s help pages no longer list a reverse effect, so the method that works on every phone is to reverse the clip first and upload the backwards version.

The reliable way to post a reversed video on TikTok is to reverse it before you open the app: choose the clip on this page, check the backwards preview, export it as a 9:16 MP4 and save it to your phone. Then in TikTok tap **+**, **Upload**, pick the reversed video and add sounds, text and effects as usual.

Many tutorials still send you to **Effects → Time → Reverse** in TikTok’s editor. Some versions of the app may show it, but TikTok’s current help pages on editing describe trimming, **Split**, rearranging and **Speed**, not reversing, so you can’t count on finding it. Reversing first also lets you pick exactly which part runs backwards and what happens to the sound. If you want the forward-and-back loop rather than a plain reverse, see [how to make a boomerang on TikTok](https://boomerang.video/boomerang-on-tiktok).

## How to reverse a video for TikTok

1. ### Open the clip here
Press **Choose a video** and pick the clip from your gallery or files. It starts playing backwards in the preview.
2. ### Set it up for TikTok
Set **Shape** to **9:16** so it fills the screen, drag the preview to frame it, and trim the window on the **Pick the part** strip if only part should run backwards.
3. ### Decide on the sound
Leave **Sound** off if you’ll add a TikTok sound. Turn it on to keep the clip’s audio, either reversed or, with **Reverse the sound too** off, playing forwards.
4. ### Export and upload
Press **Export reversed video**, then **Share or save to Photos**. In TikTok, tap **+**, then **Upload**, choose the video and post it.

## Reversing inside TikTok: the Time effects

Older versions of TikTok’s editor had a **Time** group under **Effects** with **Reverse**, **Repeat** and **Slow-mo**. If your app still shows it, the steps were:

1. Record or upload the clip and go to the editing screen.
2. Tap **Effects**, then **Time**.
3. Tap **Reverse**, preview it, and tap **Save**.

Because TikTok doesn’t document this effect any more, it may be missing on your phone or in your region, and it reverses the whole clip. Reversing before upload doesn’t depend on the app version.

## Reverse a TikTok you saved

You can reverse any video file that’s on your phone, including your own TikToks saved to the gallery before or after posting. Save it from TikTok with **Share → Save video** (only available when the creator allows downloads), then open the saved file on this page.

* Saved TikToks may carry a watermark that will also play backwards; your own drafts saved before posting don’t have one.
* Only reverse and repost videos you made or have permission to use.
* If the video has a TikTok sound you want to keep, it’s usually better to reverse the picture with **Sound** off and add the sound back in TikTok.

## Reversed TikTok ideas that work

* **Un-doing** something: a drink pouring back into the glass, a smashed tower rebuilding, clothes jumping onto a hanger.
* **Impossible jumps**: someone leaping up onto a wall or out of a pool.
* **Reveal** transitions: film walking away from a scene, then reverse it so you appear to arrive.
* **Slowed reverses**: set **Speed** to 0.5× and turn on **Smooth frames** for a dreamy, drifting look.

For a forward-and-back version made the same way in an editor, see the [CapCut boomerang method](https://boomerang.video/boomerang-in-capcut). For clips edited together in another app first, the [CapCut reverse guide](https://boomerang.video/reverse-video-capcut) explains reversing one part of a longer edit. The full list of options is on the [video reverser page](https://boomerang.video/reverse-video).

## TikTok reverse questions

### Does TikTok still have a reverse effect?

TikTok’s current help pages don’t list one. Some versions of the app may still show Reverse under Effects → Time, but it isn’t on every phone. Reversing the clip before you upload it works everywhere.

### How do I reverse a video I already posted on TikTok?

Use the original file if it’s still on your phone, or save the post with Share → Save video. Open it here, export the reversed version and upload it as a new post.

### How do I reverse a TikTok with the sound playing normally?

On this page, turn on Sound under Export settings and switch off Reverse the sound too. The picture runs backwards while the audio plays forwards.

### What size should a reversed video for TikTok be?

Vertical 9:16\. Choose 9:16 under Shape and Large under Size, which gives 1080 by 1920 when the source has enough resolution.

### Can I reverse a video on TikTok without the app?

Yes. This page reverses the clip in your phone’s browser; you only need the TikTok app to post it.
